Individual children develop different skills at different times and at varying rates. Certain skills may be inherently strong or may have been fostered by an older sibling, parent or other member of the extended family. Some children will have had extensive input at home, whereas others will have had limited exposure to books and print or mark-making with crayons, pencils or paint. In Nursery and Reception Years at school, the age difference between the youngest and oldest members of the class can be 25%. These factors alone will account for a broad spectrum of readiness for the more academic side of learning that many children encounter when they start school.

A series of posts explores some of the difficulties children may experience and offers suggestions to support mathematical skills acquisition at school or at home.
